What app shows the weather along my road-trip route?

Viltri, an iPhone app, forecasts the weather along a driving route: for each drive leg of a trip it checks 12 points along the road and shows the forecast for the time you are expected to reach each one.

It takes the route and driving time from Apple Maps and the departure from the trip’s own dates, so the conditions are for when you will be there, not for right now. Stretches with rain, snow or thunderstorms are grouped and marked Caution or Warning, with the miles and times they cover.

Planning your own trips is part of Viltri Premium. The free plan includes a demo trip that shows the route forecast.

Is there an app that shows FAA ground delays for my flight?

Viltri shows FAA ground stops and ground delays on the flight legs of a trip, read from the FAA’s public airport status feed, next to the current METAR weather report for both airports.

Airport conditions for a flight open five days before departure. For flights leaving today or tomorrow, Viltri can also send a notification when an FAA delay program affects the departure or arrival airport. The FAA feed covers US airports only.

FAA delays on flight legs are a Viltri Premium feature.

How can I see the weather at each stop of a multi-stop trip?

In Viltri you enter a trip once, with each stop, its dates and the flight or drive legs between them, and the app shows the weather for every stop on the days you are there.

Within about a week of a stop’s dates you see that day’s forecast. Further out, Viltri shows the typical high and low for those dates from NASA’s 1991–2020 climate record, labelled as not a forecast. Each stop is shown in its own local time.

A trip can be typed, spoken, or imported from a calendar event, a shared confirmation email or a screenshot of a booking. Your own trips are part of Viltri Premium.

Is there a weather app that works without an account?

Viltri works without an account: there is no sign-up and no login, and every part of the app is usable without one.

Trips are stored on the iPhone and, if iCloud is on, synced through your own private iCloud database, which the developer cannot read. Viltri’s App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected”, and the app contains no third-party analytics or advertising code.

Is there a free weather radar app with lightning?

Viltri’s radar is free, and in the United States it includes a lightning layer showing NOAA’s lightning strike data for the last three hours.

The radar timeline runs from the last hour of radar into a six-hour forecast from NOAA’s HRRR model. Other US map layers include temperature, wind with direction arrows, clouds, gusts, snow and satellite; Viltri offers only the layers NOAA is serving at that moment. Outside the US the map shows NASA satellite imagery and a satellite rain estimate.

How do I share a trip’s weather forecast with family who don’t have the app?

Viltri makes a share link for a trip that opens in any web browser, on Android, iPhone or a computer, with no app and no account needed to view it.

The page lists every stop and leg, with current National Weather Service conditions for stops in the US. The trip is encrypted on your phone before it is uploaded, and the key travels only in the part of the link after the #, so Viltri’s server stores data it cannot read.

You can share any trip you can open: the demo trip on the free plan, and your own trips with Premium.

Which weather app tells me if conditions suit motorcycling, golf, boating, hiking or skiing?

Viltri reads the forecast against limits for the activity you choose, motorcycle riding, golf, boating, hiking, skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, or snowmobiling, and says on the Today screen whether conditions suit it and until when.

The wind limits are 15 mph for boating, 20 mph for a motorcycle ride or cross-country skiing, 25 mph for golf, skiing or snowmobiling, and 30 mph for hiking. For the summer activities any rain, snow or thunderstorm in an hour rules that hour out; for the winter ones snow is welcome, but rain, freezing rain and storms still rule it out. Each activity also has a temperature range, such as 45–100 °F for riding and 0–50 °F for skiing.

Activity advice is free. The activity you choose also appears under the weather on Viltri’s widget, with the best window of the day.

Can I import a flight itinerary from my calendar or a confirmation email into a weather app?

Viltri can build a trip from a calendar event, from an airline confirmation email shared to the app, or from a screenshot of a booking.

Each flight becomes a leg between two airports, labelled with its flight number and route, for example SY431 · MSP → AUA. A screenshot is read on the iPhone with Apple’s Vision framework; the image is not uploaded or kept.

Creating your own trips, including imported ones, is a Viltri Premium feature.

What does Viltri cost, and what is free?

Viltri is free to download, and the free plan includes today’s weather, the 7-day forecast, radar with a six-hour forecast, National Weather Service alerts for where you are, live flights, widgets, activity advice and one watched place, with no ads.

Viltri Premium costs $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year in the US, after a 7-day free trial. It adds your own trips, alerts for trip stops and watched places, FAA ground stops and METAR on flight legs, unlimited watched places, your own photo as the background, and removes the upgrade prompt. Subscriptions are billed through Apple.

Does Viltri work outside the United States?

Viltri works outside the United States with forecasts from MET Norway, but its weather alerts, NOAA radar and map layers, and FAA airport delays cover the US only.

Inside the US and its territories the forecast comes from the National Weather Service. Elsewhere, the map shows NASA satellite imagery and a satellite rain estimate, live aircraft appear wherever volunteer ADS-B receivers have coverage, and the METAR airport reports on flight legs work worldwide. The app is in English and is offered in 175 countries and regions.

Free on iPhone. No account.
